Bring on the controversy! We know (thanks to tons of studies!) how effective ERP is for OCD. What we’re working on getting a better understanding of is how to add in adjunct therapy or other types of therapy for those who haven’t responded well to OCD. So if ERP alone hasn’t worked…there are options out there that may help (on their own…or as a way to get you ready for ERP!)
At first, it feels possible to complete those rituals…but then they get harder and harder to manage so instead of completing the ritual so you can perform whatever action OCD said no to, you slowly stop the action because the rituals are too much.
OCD is really successful at keeping you trapped in the ritual cycle because it doesn’t let you ever feel like you completed it successfully!
