Art Therapy

COA offers art therapy as a creative and supportive approach to healing with our board certified art therapists. Through painting, drawing, and other art forms, clients can explore emotions, reduce stress, and build self-awareness in a safe and nonjudgmental space. No artistic experience is required—just a willingness to express yourself and discover new paths to growth.

Art Therapy Questions?

WHAT CAN ART THERAPY HELP WITH?
Working through significant persistent symptoms from anxiety, OCD, fear, resentment, self-esteem, grief and loss, anger, depression, betrayal, and many more!
Can any therapist do art therapy?
No, only individuals with a masters or comparable in art therapy can.
Can every therapist utilize art?
Yes! Art facilitation for coping skill development/ emotion regulation techniques is great!
Is art therapy just for kids?
Absolutely not! Anyone can benefit and adults have a tendency to have greater ability to stay with metaphors and go deeper into their feelings/experiences/art
“I’m not good at art, that means I can’t do art therapy right?”
No! everyone can participate in art therapy if they are interested! Art therapy is about the process and what is captured in the image and not about the skill level!
“If I make bad art, I will be judged”
Nope! Art therapists function on being curious and we clarify our concerns before we jump to assumptions
“I don’t even care about art, how will art therapy benefit me?”
Every piece of art created can be seen in the context of the creator- some art therapists believe that every piece of art is, in someway, a self portrait. If someone is willing to participate in artmaking, even casually, their developmental level can be assessed, and themes can be noticed
Can you look at artwork and know exactly what happened and how?
Art therapists are not psychic; however, we are trained to look for patterns or curious details. Taking these moments of the artwork and looking at them through the context of the client can lead to insight.

At COA, art therapy is offered as a supportive tool alongside Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) therapy. It’s designed to complement ERP by helping clients process emotions, express themselves creatively, and strengthen treatment progress. Art therapy is not provided as a stand-alone service but as part of an integrated treatment plan. If you are interested in receiving services, please click below.
